Chapter 4. A Knife in the Back

WEDNESDAY, 12:13 P.M.
*

*
“Thank you so much for taking time to go with me.” I said to my dad.
*
“No problem, baby girl.  I’m glad to help,” he murmured.
*
He’d come down from his office in Doo Peas Corporate Towers to meet me and walk me up to the real-estate agent’s office.  I’d asked him to sit in on my meeting because even though I was an adult, technically speaking, I had no idea how to buy a house.  I’d done a little research, but I still wanted someone around in case I forgot something important.
*
“I like seeing you on lunch break.  We should do this more often.” he said.  I agreed as we made our way into the building.
*
*
*

*
Moments later, we were sitting across from Penelope Cho-Richards.  She’d helped my parents find their bungalow when they moved to Sunset Valley.
*
“Thank you for seeing me on my lunch break Ms. Cho-Richards.” I said.
*
“Please–call me Penny.” she said with a warm smile.
*
“Then please call me Edith.” I said.  I was trying to be a grown-up, and my father’s mouth quirked in a small smile.
*
*
*

*
“Now–what are you looking for in a home?” she asked.
*
I was prepared for this question.
*
“Something small-ish, but with an extra bedroom for guests.” I said.
*
“So two bedrooms then.  What about bathrooms?” she asked.
*
“Um…well, I’d prefer just one.  Less to clean, you know?” I said.
*
*
*

*
“Good point.” she said, laughing.  “And anything else specific?  Do you want a big kitchen?”
*
“Oh, not really.  I’m not home all that often and I’m hardly a gourmet.  A small kitchen is fine.” I said.
*
“Well, we’re really getting a picture of the type of house you need, but now we need to think about areas.” she said, before proceeding to ask me questions about my lifestyle, habits, hobbies, and price range.
*
*
*

*
“We definitely have some houses in the area that will fit your needs.  I’ll start making arrangements for showings.” she said.
*
We discussed my schedule and she reassured me that most of the houses had realtor locks that would allow me to see them at my leisure, which was good because between the library and Rocca Investigations, I didn’t have much free time.
*
We finished our business and I left my dad at his office.  I drove home with my mind reeling–I’d taken the first step to become a homeowner.
*
*
*

*
WEDNESDAY, 8:30 P.M.
*

*

Wednesday nights were self-defense training nights, so I reported to Sean’s house not long after I finished my closing duties at work and changed into some workout clothing.  I reached his house before the sun had finished setting.
*
I knocked on his front door automatically, then stopped to look through the windows set into the doorframe.
*
There was someone in there with him.
*
Oh. Crap,I thought.
*
*
*

*
“C’mon in, Eddie.  Hey, you don’t mind if Nicky trains with us tonight, do you?” Sean asked.
*
“I’m getting a bit rusty.” Nick said apologetically.
*
“Of course I don’t mind.” I said.  It was an utter lie, of course.  I’d already been a little nervous because I would be sparring with Sean–Sean, the great homework assignment of my currently non-existent love-life.  I had no idea how to proceed with Sean when it came to encouraging his attentions, and now I’d have Nick standing over my shoulder, inhibiting any advances I might have made tonight.
*
*
*

*
I was happy that Nick took up a seat behind me so that I couldn’t see his face as I sparred with Sean.  I could almost forget he was back there, watching.  Unfortunately, whenever I did remember it made me worry about whether my butt looked big.
*
“You’re getting better.” Sean said.  “A lot better.”
*
“Thanks.” I huffed, trying to concentrate on landing my shots.   After a little more sparring, Sean declared a break-time.
*
*
*

*
“My turn.” Nick said, hopping up from his spot in the grass.
*
“Sure thing, man.  Ed, you’re up.”  He said, gesturing toward Nick.
*
“What?” I squeaked.  Then I tried to recover.  “Ha, ha.  Funny.  Good joke.”
*
“I’m not joking–it will be good for you to spar with someone different.  He has a completely different style.” Sean said.
*
“But I won’t be of any help to him, and it will be a waste of his time.” I said quickly.
*
“Nonsense–you’ll make a great opponent.” Nick said, with a strange gleam in his eye.
*
*
*

*
We sank into our fighting stances and I valiantly tried to psyche myself up to hit Nick.
*
After a few moments of us simply circling each other, I thought I can’t hit him.  He’s too nice.
*
“I can’t hit you.  You’re too nice.” I said.  I heard Sean let out a bark of laughter, and I was almost certain I heard him say something like, “Never was a problem with me.”
*
Before I could react, Nick reached out and swiped the side of my head with a slap that had me stumbling back in disoriented surprise.
*
*
*

*
“How do you feel about hitting me now?” he asked.
*
“Oh, I feel great about hitting you now.” I said, recovering my stance.  I was ready.
*
“Glad we got that cleared up.” he said dryly.
*
Nick took his sparring seriously.  While Sean would usually crack jokes while dancing around my strikes, Nick barely cracked a smile.  His style was different, as Sean had warned–there was less evasion and redirection and more surprise and brute force.  He was incredibly strong, and he moved faster than I expected.
*
After Nick bested me three times, Sean called out, “My turn.” I gratefully slunk away and sank to the grass.
*
*
*

*
“Hold on.” Nick said, before turning and peeling off his shirt.  “It’s hot as hell.”
*
As hot as it was, I couldn’t help but feel like it must be Christmas as I drank in the beauty of Nick’s physique. Holy shit!
*
I was watching him with stunned fascination and wondering how I was going to be able to ever get the image of his perfect body out of my head long enough to work with him when I noticed something else that was even more interesting than his glorious abs.
*
*
*

*
I was more intrigued by the huge knife that was tattooed onto his back and followed by a line of characters that trailed down into the waistband of his shorts.
*
While I wasn’t all that shocked that Nick had a tattoo–it seemed like everyone had them these days–I was taken aback by the fact that it was a knife.  Nick didn’t seem like the bloodthirsty type, but then I remembered his vicious swipe at my head and wondered if I should reconsider my view of him.
*
What do I really know about him, anyway? I thought.  The truth was: not much. Not much at all.
*
*
*

*
After Sean had beat Nick twice in a row and they were both starting to show signs of fatigue, they called an end to the sparring.  Sean went inside to get some water and grab a towel and I cautiously made my way toward Nick.
*
“Shit.  I need to be doing this more.” Nick said.
*
“You did pretty well.  You beat Sean once.” I said.
*
“Not good enough.” Nick said.
*
“I take it you’re competitive?” I said.
*
Nick laughed softly before admitting it.  “Very.”
*
*
*

*
I tried (unsuccessfully) not to stare at his pecs as I ventured to find out what I wanted to know.
*
“So…that’s a pretty interesting tattoo.” I said.
*
“What? Oh, yeah.  I forget it’s there.” Nick said, and I watched his expression become a little more guarded.
*
“What do the characters below it mean?” I asked. Might as well be direct about it.
*
He looked at me uneasily for several moments before saying, “It means ‘all the old knives that have rusted in my back, I drive in yours’.”
*
*
*

*
“Huh.” I said.  I didn’t know what to say.
*
“An old proverb or fable from a Roman poet.  Phaedrus.  I took a class in Greek and Roman literature in college and that quote stayed with me.  But the characters are actually Chinese.  The tattoo was….an impulse.” he said.
*
“You were drunk?” I asked.
*
“No.  I was angry.” he said.  “Well, I’m beat.  I’ll see you tomorrow.”
*
I took his hint and dropped the subject, but I filed it away as something to figure out later.  On the one hand, I didn’t want to dredge up bad memories for him, but on the other hand–you don’t tattoo something on yourself that you want to forget.
*
*
*

*
I’d followed Nick inside, but once he’d gone I was left alone with Sean.
*
“Enjoy your show?” Sean asked, watching as Nick drove away.
*
“The sparring? Sure…you are both really good.” I said.
*
“I noticed you really snapped to attention once his shirt came off.” Sean said lightly.  There was the merest edge to his voice.
*
He’s jealous!
*
“You’re jealous.” I said.
*
“Yes.” he replied.
*
*
*

*
“You know…” I said, moving closer to him.  “I wouldn’t mind seeing you shirtless.  Someday.”
*
His eyebrows shot up and he started to smile.
*
“Ditto, my darling.  Now you’d better leave before I decide that today is ‘someday’.” he said.  I grinned at him and left before he made good on his threat.

  1. Yay I loved it! I’m all about fictional romantic angst and jealousy. 🙂

I like the tattoo. And the chest and arm hair. *swoon*

Am very much interested in hearing more about the story behind the tattoo. And, of course, more romantic angst! Yay!

    • Medleymisty: With this particular situation, I think romantic angst and jealousy are going to be hard to avoid, so I’m glad you like it. 😉

I am liking the new skins quite a bit, and if I had more tattoos or the ability to create my own, I’d like the whole Ambitions tattoo system better. I know there are some hacks to do those things out there somewhere, but I haven’t bothered looking for them yet.

Thank you for reading and commenting! 🙂

  2. *sits here with a huge grin* Seriously, this is the best morning ever. It’s 7:00 am and I have no business being awake, but then I saw Nick there, and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stop reading. And then he took his shirt off.

And he had a tattoo! Wow. Just when I thought I was over Nick, you do this and now I’m all over him again. Clearly that tattoo is not nothing. I half wonder if Nick doesn’t have ties of some sort to a gang. Oh, Nick might have been a bad boy himself. That is so sexy. WHy is that so sexy? LOL!

Sean’s reaction though– omg that sealed it. Awww! He was jealous and Ed called him out on it. That last scene they are perfect together. While Nick may have definitely aroused my interest,* Sean still has my logical mind.

And Ed was flirting, lol! This was all kinds of perfect.

*Yes, I chose to go pervy there. Brave move this early in the morning for a non-coffee drinker.

    • LunarFox: It is certainly a nice way to begin the day, if I do say so myself. 😉

Given the number of men you have running around half-clothed and tattooed, I’m surprised my “tame” guys can arouse your interest, LOL.

Yep, Nick took his shirt off. Thanks to the new skins, I could bring myself to let him take his shirt off (though I was far more concerned with being able to get Sean’s shirt off at first).

Yep, Nick has a big freakin’ tattoo, and it comes with a history. Some bad boys are just sexy–maybe the idea of Nick being a bad boy is sexier because he doesn’t look at all like one? Our Nick has some layers that are often concealed by his carefully pressed shirts and slacks (and I’m not talking about layers of muscle, though as we’ve seen that was under there, too).

Sean was openly jealous–he’s not ashamed to admit it. Given what he knows of Ed, he has every reason to be–after all, her first crush was on Nick. Seeing her practically salivate over him can’t be good for the ego.

Ed was indeed flirting–she wanted to reassure him, and she really is trying to let him in.

I’m so glad you liked it! 🙂

  3. This chapter was INTENSE (for all the right reasons, heehee).

I’m giving Nick some serious side eye right now. I agree with Ed–what DO we know about him? Not much. The tattoo is very interesting, indeed. I really want to know more about it. I have a feeling that it has some…less than stellar (and less than what I presume to be “Nick-like”) meaning. By the way, the shirtless pics were *ahem* very nice. I like his arm hair. : P

Aw, Sean was jealous. How adorable, lol. I love the way those two flirt with each other. And I can’t wait to see him…make good on his threat.

    • Lhasa: Definitely lots of tension around these three.

We know a smattering of facts about Nick, but nothing that would explain that tattoo. Glad you like the shirtless pics. 😉

Sean’s jealousy is inevitable, I think–best to get it out in the open. It was pretty adorable, though. Ed has no delusions about Nick, but that won’t stop her from enjoying the eye candy. Sean just can’t really tell the difference right now. I’m hoping he’ll get to make good on his threat before long. 😉

  4. Oh dear I forgot completely forgot about to check back, thats why I didn’t comment on any of the Chapter Three’s stories. I can’t believe it, you even have defaults! 😀 Wow, I missed out on a lot and I was very excited to see Isis again 😀 Anyway Ed looks totally cute in her dress when she visits Penelope. Kind of like a 40’s mannequin. 🙂
And I was like ‘OMG, Sean and Ed are going to have woo-hoo!’ lol. Well, maybe one day. 😉
Great story! Can’t wait for the next update.

    • Rhys: Well I’m glad you made your way back! 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

Yep, stepping up the Sim appearances a notch, I hope. I like the way they’ve turned out thus far.

Nope, no woohoo for Ed and Sean…yet. Maybe one day, indeed. 😉

  5. Goodness I absolutely LOVED this chapter! Shirtless Nick? Priceless. That tattoo definitely has me wondering what he was up to in his past and makes me wanna know more about him. And I really, really can’t wait to see Sean make good on his promise 😉

Ah Ed. You are so lucky. I really hope she manages to open up a bit. 🙂

    • Morbid_Mew: Thank you! I’m thrilled that you liked it. 🙂

I certainly believe Nick’s past is interesting, and one day we’ll learn more about it–but for now, I can only drop hints.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Sean make good on his promise, either. 😉 I wonder if Ed could have handled both of them, shirtless at the same time?

I hope she manages to open up too….she’ll certainly be working toward that goal.

  6. absolutely priceless….

So Sean set this up to see Ed’s reaction to gorgeous Nick with the ominous tat down his back.

    *pause…breathe*

Ed always surprises me. Going right at it, asking him what it means instead of denying she was ever looking at it. and the way she takes on Sean. Asking directly are you jealous. Love this, completely in love with this chapter!!

    • S.B. : I’m not sure who set it up, to be quite honest….you and your nefarious motives! My first impulse was to say that Sean isn’t much of a “tester”–but then you got me to thinking. He’s always watching her face–he detected her crush on Nick in the first story. He’s always gauging reactions. Maybe he is a tester, after all. But Nick…Nick might have wanted her to see him in all his glory…not sure yet. He’s really difficult to understand, sometimes.

Ed figures with a tat like that, you can’t really act like you didn’t see it. Especially when he jumping around with his shirt off. Nick knows she’s inquisitive, and I wonder if he’d be surprised if she hadn’t asked? You bring up so many things I never even considered!

Part of her asking Sean if he was jealous was trying to make her thoughts translate into words more of a reflex with him. She usually goes through an extensive screening process between her thoughts and her words, and she wants to break it down a bit with Sean because she often has thoughts about him that he needs to know, if she wants him to feel encouraged. But another part of it was because she was happy that he was jealous.

      • LOL! Amazing how much of our subconscious goes into these things, huh?

Okay, I have to admit that Sean surprised me here. I mean, he knows that Ed liked Nick at some point, and he sends her off to spar with Nick. I didn’t right away think “testing” but something about it seemed strange (and not in the “what is up with this plot” strange).

And then when Nick pulled off his shirt, well I completely took that as someone who might be subconsciously flaunting it, you know? I almost get the feeling that he likes the attention of someone like Ed having a sweet crush on him. I mean, it is flattering and completely innocent. Doesn’t matter how much you love your partner, crushes serve as reminders of our youth. Who wouldn’t like that along with the whole obvious ego stroking.

Nick probably would have been surprised if Ed hadn’t asked, but I’d bet not right away. He’d probably think it over some point later and then realize that she hadn’t said anything.

Also, I love the fact that twice in this chapter, Ed had a thought and then said it out loud. That is huge. Plus it’s clear she’s really trying.

This is all the stuff I might’ve said before if I wasn’t distracted by this new side of Nick, lmao!

      • LunarFox: LOL! I love that you were so distracted that you couldn’t think of these things earlier. Now you know how I feel after one of your posts. 😉

Sean is…how to put it…Sean isn’t the type to avoid this kind of trouble. Does that make any sense? If there’s going to be something like this going on (Ed’s crush on Nick), he wants it out there and he wants to poke at it to make sure it won’t bite him in the ass later. That probably doesn’t make any sense, but it’s the vibe I get from him. He won’t play the avoidance card here, or the “let’s just never hang out with Nick” card, and I think it’s partially because Nick is so important to him. Nick is a major part of his life, and he’s not going to change that. He needs to know if Ed is going to be okay with Nick around. I still wouldn’t say he consciously made this into a test. He really did think it was a good idea that Ed spar with Nick, because he’s a different type of fighter–his approach is influenced more by his time as a police officer, so his training is very different from Sean’s. Sean’s training is a little more formal, heavier on the traditional martial arts. Nick’s approach is more “whatever works”.

Your vibes about Nick are….dare I say it….spot on. He is flattered. He’s a smart guy, and at first, Ed hung on his every word….he could tell she had a thing for him. But now, her attentions are straying to the person she spends more time with, the one she’s getting to know better…..and I think he kinda misses the adoration. He can tell that she’s getting more comfortable around him, and that makes him happy–but it also kinda makes him sad because he’s getting the feeling that she’s not looking at him the same way anymore. This aspect of his character makes me wonder if Sean was testing Nick, here? Hmmm….

I love all these comments that make me think deeper about the motivations of my own characters……it’s probably pretty weird that I don’t know all these things about them, but I think I’m more privy to their actions and reactions than their inner thoughts, if that makes any sense….

  7. EEEE!!!! That’s the sound I made reading this. haha. Man, those mods you are using do some miracles if you ask me. I almost forgot Nick was a sim for a minute! But I am still on Team Sean. =]

Ed looks very different. Did you use the same mod for her as Sean and Nick? Because they still look like the same but just a tiny bit different than before. But Ed looks much different. It kind of looks like you tweaked her facial features a bit. Not saying it’s a bad thing, just an observation.

I like this chapter though. You get to see more of Nicks character. Before I thought he was just some “nice guy”. But here we learn theres more behind him. Not just because of his tattoo either, but his whole demeanor. Very well written. Good job!

    • Amyjobee: lol! I am loving the mods so far. 🙂

Ed does look quite a bit different–it is the same face mod, but for some reason it changed some of her major features more than it did the guys. It changed the shape of her mouth and I think it must have done something to the shape of her eyes. I’ll keep tweaking as I go. I have already tried to shape her mouth back into something more like what it was before, but my skills in these things are wobbly, at best. I almost didn’t adopt the mod for her for that very reason. I like the other things it does for her, though, so I’ll give it a few more rounds before I decide whether to yank it on her (but I’ll definitely keep it on the guys).

There’s a whole slew of things behind Nick. We haven’t even scratched the surface with him, yet. We probably won’t learn much more about him in this story, but his turn will come. I’m glad that you’re able to pick up on some of the quirks of his demeanor. He’s a very different person from Sean.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  8. Loved it!! It’s great that Ed is taking bigger steps now. A house, something permanent, something that will help her put down roots is a great idea – I just hope that she isn’t taking things a little too fast?

Still, she seems to be coping quite well with these big steps and moving out of that protective bubble she erected around herself. I can’t imagine Ed of earlier times coming straight out and asking about Nick’s tattoo like that … or flirting so openly with Sean. Damn, I wouldn’t mind seeing him shirtless myself!

So, if Sean set it up to see how Ed would react to shirtless Nick as SB said, why didn’t he go shirtless himself to see how she reacted to himself? Is there a little insecurity there, a little rivalry with his cousin (or envy) that goes beyond Ed? It’s almost as if he has already convinced himself he will lose her to Nick so might as well make the pain happen now before he is in too deep. Has this happened before, or at least been perceived to happen before?

I’d love to know what made Nick so angry that he would give himself such a large reminder of the event – although being on his back he probably doesn’t see it that often. Still I wonder if he does actually forget it is there or if he is just trying to forget?

Oops, sorry, I don’t usually delve that deep at this hour of a Saturday morning, but this chapter has just raised so many questions for me.

But back to those abs … holy cow, I downloaded that particular skin myself earlier this week but haven’t had a chance to play with it yet. I’ve never been fond of hirsute men but think I may be changing my mind!

    • Illandrya: She’s been thinking about getting a house of her own since sometime in story 2…maybe the beginning? I can’t remember. It’s something she’s considered before, but never this seriously. Right now, she still feels like she’s window shopping for it, rather than actually buying anything. She could say no to everything the realtor shows…

It’s definitely true that Ed of earlier times would not have come right out and asked Nick those questions. Part of it is that she knows Nick, and he knows her–she’s curious. She’s the same person who started snooping into her co-worker’s disappearance, but you are exactly right to note that she has a lot more confidence now. Flirting with Sean is something she’s getting better at. She’s testing herself with Sean–testing her boundaries, seeing if she can do this. I don’t think you’ll have to wait long to see Sean shirtless. 😉

I’m really not sure that Sean set this up. It’s true that it may not have been completely out of character for him to do something like that–but it is also true that right now he doesn’t expect Ed to be unaffected by Nick. It hasn’t been very long since she developed her crush on Nick, and given her skittishness he thinks she’s still got it pretty bad. He knows that he made some headway on the trip to France, but he’s not taking it for granted that he’s really enthralled her or anything. He’s actually been more successful than he knows, when it comes to her. There is a little insecurity there, but I don’t know that it extends beyond the situation with Ed. Keep in mind that Nick isn’t exactly “after” Ed–he’s already taken.

I think Nick can forget that the tattoo is there for very short periods of time–but given the reason it is there, it is never far from his mind. And that’s all I can say about that right now. 😉

You should definitely play with that skin! I’m enjoying it immensely. Thank you so much for your comments! I’ve really enjoyed thinking in the directions that you and S.B. are going…. 🙂

      • I honestly wouldn’t have gone the “sean set this up” route if it hadn’t been for SB’s comment; but somehow it just seemed to click with me that, as you say, it wouldn’t be out of character for him to do so. But you’ve made a good point, she is a little skittish and she’s not exactly given him enough signals to know for certain which one she is currently crushing on.

If he’s been burned before (not necessarily by Nick), then he may not find the fact that Nick is “taken” all that comforting – who wants to be in a relationship with someone who has accepted second choice because first choice is off the market?

I like that Ed’s testing her boundaries in a semi-relaxed way to see if she is capable of taking that step before she actually does. I just hope she doesn’t get stuck in the habit of “testing” and forget to move on to phase two. That isn’t fair for either of them.

      • Illandrya: You have so many good points, and you’ve hit on something very, very important: even if Ed starts letting Sean in, will he always wonder whether she would have taken Nick if he hadn’t been unavailable? Ed may not be the only one with something to overcome to make a relationship between them work.

I’m hoping Ed won’t get stuck in the “testing” phase, too. It is definitely a danger for someone like her, especially if she tries to move too fast.

  9. Go Ed! I’m glad she’s not in denial or being timid about her attraction to Sean any more.

Totally surprised by Nick’s tattoo – how intriguing. I read Lunar’s comment and I guess for me, it wouldn’t be so much the bad boy thing that’s sexy but perhaps the possibility that there’s more to someone than meets the eye. I’ve long suspected there’s much more to Nick (and Sean, while we’re at it) than what we see at first glance.

I loved this chapter! I was so excited when you said on Twitter that you’d updated but I was up late enough and I really should have been in bed, so I waited until this morning.

And I really need to start using your defaults for TS3. I think you linked to them last time I commented but I forgot to download them.

    • Carla: Yes, Ed is trying to find a way to let Sean into her life, and she figures she shouldn’t deny her attraction anymore.

I think that is true–when you find out something about someone that you never expected, you wonder what it means since everything you thought you knew about the person is now informed by the new information. 🙂

I’m so glad you liked this chapter, and I totally understand about staying up too late! 🙂

The new skins and eyes are so much fun–you should play around with some and find the combination you like! The ones I use are on my Mods & CC page, here. Have fun!

  10. Aww!Yay Ed! Great update! There’s not too much more I can add…I love the discussion and speculation regarding the motives behind everything!

As a side note, Sean needn’t worry about Ed crushing on Nick first. I had a crush on someone else (with Nick’s personality) when I first met my husband (who has more of Sean’s personality. Ed’s a smart girl. She knows who she can count on and trust implicitly. 😉 Plus, Sean is so much hotter than Nick. 😀

I look forward to seeing how things continue to develop. When will Sean and Ed take their road trip to find out about the ring? Will Kendra reveal her secret relationship soon? I hope so!:-)

    • Jules: I’m so glad you like the chapter.

I love that you had a romance that took that trajectory–how wonderful! I of course can’t say exactly where this one is going, but I’m glad that you can identify with Ed and that you have a special reason for cheering Sean on. 🙂

Sean and Ed will definitely be taking their road trip, and we’ll probably see the first of that in the chapter after the next. We have some pretty important things to get through in the next chapter because Ed and Sean have to go over some background details about Scott before they leave. We should find out who Kendra’s boyfriend is before too long. 😉

  11. A house? A house? Why a house? Wait, i get it! this is gonna be some big thing later on and nobody will have noticed it because you put it in the chapter where Nick took his shirt off! That was smart…
Ahhhhh that last scene was full of amazingness and goodness! I like the way Ed looks ike she’s biting her lip, too. She looks so evil!

    • Achansan: Ed was contemplating purchasing a house in the last story, but never got around to doing so…that’s all, really, lol. 🙂 She wanted one because she’s getting a little tired of apartment life. Her building’s super never fixes anything, and she doesn’t have a bathtub. It’s also an indication that she wants to put down roots there in Sunset Valley.

Thank you very much! I love the look she’s giving him, too–very mischievous. 😉

  12. OOOOOOOOOO!
Eddie is opening her clam!! 😀

    Nick is mysterious…..

Sean is blinded by Eddie’s shiny pearl! 😀

When I first saw the title, I was all “OH MY GOD!!! What happened?????” and then it was OK because it was just Nick’s tat. *relief*

    • Mau: Like Ed pointed out, we really don’t know very much about Nick at this point. We know some key facts, but it’s still not much.

LOL…I guess I should be more careful about my titles. After all, Ed has been stabbed before…

  13. Aw, Ed’s expression in the final shot is priceless! Terribly cute. Loved the chapter, it’s great to see her start to open up and think about her friends more. Also, how exciting – she’s going to buy a house!

    • Tipix7: I was really happy with that face, so I’m glad you liked it too. 🙂 I think she’s heading in the right direction–trying to open up, trying to be a better friend. It is very exciting that she’s buying a house….I was so negligent when I started the story when it came to her apartment. I just threw her right into one, and didn’t really give it any thought. I was too excited to start writing to really think about whether it suited her, etc.. Now I want to revisit it and do it right…

  14. I very much enjoyed the character development with Nick, and seeing new layers of him (in more ways than one, keke). I enjoyed seeing how competitive he is, the unexpected revelation that he has a tattoo. Does the tattoo mean that Nick has been betrayed and has a festering grudge about something? If so, I wonder what happened to him in his past.

I actually have a tattoo on my back that I forget about all the time, but I don’t think I’d ever forget a tattoo like Nick’s though.

I was also thinking about the earlier discussion with Illandrya that Sean might always wonder if Ed took him because Nick was unavailable. I hope that’s not the case, and I hope Nick doesn’t pursue Ed because he’s with Erica, dammit. Nick is competitive though, although I don’t see him competing with Sean over a girl though, hmm.

    • Tesseracta: I’m so glad you liked this new look at Nick (ha, ha). It was time to start setting up a chain of information that will come in bits and pieces throughout the story and well…honestly, the series. We probably won’t find out much more about Nick’s tattoo in this story–but Ed knows it’s there and she’s seen a side of him now that will probably color her perception of him. But I think it is safe to bet that he is holding quite the grudge…

I think it would be difficult for Sean not to wonder about what would have happened between Ed and Nick, had Nick been single. Nick is with Erica, so I don’t think he’d actively pursue Ed….but I’m not sure that means he wouldn’t try to keep her attention. It really is difficult for me to understand him, sometimes….

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  15. Oh my! All these beautiful men topless sparring in the sim story world of late!

Love seeing Nick again, love the tension between the three of them, oh and love Ed saying to call her Edith so she sounds a bit more grown up. *Bless*.

Can Ed afford a house on library pay? (In Britain that’d be impossible, SIGH) Or does the sleuthing pay rather well?

    • Rad: lol, I know…..maybe it really is Christmas!

I’m so glad you like the tension….I always worry a bit about that…

No, Ed absolutely cannot afford a house on library pay, but in the last story (admittedly a while ago) we found out that she was given an inheritance from her grandmother’s will, and the only stipulation for its use was that she couldn’t put a penny of it toward finding Scott (her grandmother was very bitter and believed that Scott had simply run away–she never forgave him). She isn’t being paid anything for sleuthing (one of those dreary unpaid internships). We’re not sure exactly how much she was given, but the implication is that it’s enough for a substantial downpayment. 🙂

  16. This just made me laugh (that’s what I do when I encounter *ahem* certain lovely things xD), and by the way, do you have something in your game for sim’s expressions because in the last few pictures, and one of Nick, their faces seemed so much more emotive than in my game! Almost like Sims 2 😛
Yet another lovely chapter, thank you 😀

    • Abby: Thank you! I’m glad you liked it. 🙂

I use a few mods and skins, which may have some effect–you can find the things I’ve been using on my Mods & CC page. On one of the pictures, I actually used Photoshop’s “Liquify” tool to make Nick’s smirk a little more sarcastic. It was a tip I got from the author of Lakeside Heights, an excellent TS2 story blog. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  17. ROFL, “It’s hot as hell.” Yes, it certainly is!!! 😀

This was cute! And by this, I mean the dudes? lol! I might have spent most of this chapter admiring the lovely new skins, and arm hair! And oh my, those TS3 builds are just really damn nice, aren’t they? Mmmm… *pixel swoon*

Awww, Sean!!! He is just adorable with his jealousy, lol! Too cute!

Oh, neat that you tried out the liquify tool! I love it for expressions! Actually, in TS2, I often have to tone down the expressions because they’re too cartoonish. I don’t think I’d know which ones in here weren’t possible with the game since I don’t have TS3, but come to think of it, they do look extra expressive in this chapter! Especially the one of Nick on his own, in the sparring, with his fists up, and the last two of Sean and Ed.

    • Laura: lol! Yeah…I was so pleased with the skins, and I needed to show Nick’s tattoo so that we start getting a sense that all is not quite as it appears with him. This isn’t a line I’ll pick up for the rest of this story, but it was time to start inserting Nick into the story more–to build a type of presence for him that generated questions about him and his motives. In many ways, he’s a much more complex character than Sean.

And you think the builds are nice now–you should see them post-Late Night. I was able to find a version of these skins that worked with the new muscle sliders, and the results are amazing. 🙂

Yep, yep, I’ve used the liquify tool several times–Nick’s expression in that shot you mention is liquified–one part of his mouth is turned up so that it looks like he’s smirking. The last two of Sean and Ed…I believe those are actually the way they appeared in game. TS3 isn’t bad at all with facial expressiveness, but sometimes the looks just don’t capture quite what you have in mind for a particular scene. Sometimes the liquify tool works for that, and sometimes it doesn’t, but I heard about the trick from you!
