Chapter 10. Divulgence

FRIDAY, 7:15 P.M.

The lovely thing about having a double date involving dinner is that you have a built-in excuse for not joining in the conversation, as long as you keep shoveling food in your mouth.  I chewed my food slowly so that I’d have plenty to see me through the rest of the meal without feeling obligated to speak unless I was addressed directly.  Thankfully, the rest of our party carried on merrily and didn’t seem to notice my silence.

“So, what are your plans for this weekend?” Erica asked Sean.

“Ed and I will do some surveillance for one of our cases tomorrow night, but Sunday we’ll be moving Ed into her new place.”

“Sounds like you’ll be really busy.  I know that Nick has been doing a lot of surveillance lately.”

“Yeah, he’s been taking up where Ed and I have to leave off most days.”
*
*
*

“How much longer do you think it will take?”

“I think we’re really close to getting the answers we need.  I’m working on another angle just in case we don’t get anything from following people around.”

“That’s good.  Maybe soon you’ll get a rest from the surveillance.”
*
*
*

“Yeah, well it’s not like we’ll get much of a break from it.”

“Really? You have another case lined up already that requires surveillance?”

“Well, yeah–the one to track the movement of Dorantes’s drug transport.” Sean said.
*

*

Across the table from me, Nick paused with his fork near his mouth and closed his eyes.

“What?  You’re moving on that soon?” Erica was looking around the table for an explanation.

He didn’t tell her, I thought.
*
*
*

“I didn’t say anything about it because of the leaks in your office.  I thought that if you knew you might unintentionally let it slip or you might make a call to me about it and–” Nick started to explain.

“I get it.” Erica’s tone was hard and sharp, a knife that cut him off.
*
*
*

The sound of our forks scraping across our plates was loud in the silence that followed their exchange.  Nick quizzed me about my plans for the house in an effort to change the mood in the room, but it didn’t quite work.  We all finished our meals and Sean and I took our leave after Nick and Erica both declined our offers of help in the kitchen.  I knew that they would begin fighting as soon as the front door closed.

SATURDAY, 10:40 P.M.

“I asked Nick why he didn’t warn us that Erica didn’t know. He said he’d been so busy that he just forgot.” Sean shook his head.

We were outside the local cinema, waiting on Claudia Abbott and her roommate, Angela Murphy, to exit.  We’d followed them all night on what appeared to be a girls’ night out, complete with a few drinks at a local bar, some dinner at The Bistro, then a movie.
*
*
*

“Talk about awkward–that was horrible.  If they ever invite us on a double date ever again, count me out.”

“Aww, c’mon Ed.  You’ll miss all the uncomfortable silences and furtive bickering in the next room when they think we can’t hear.”

“Thanks, but I’ll pass.”
*
*
*

“Seriously, baby, I’m sorry it was such a train wreck.  If I had known it was going to be so awful I would never have agreed to it, especially on the day you signed on your house.  You deserved a real celebration, not a daytime talk show experience.”

“Don’t worry–it didn’t dull my excitement.” I didn’t add that I had my own ideas about how to celebrate.  If all went as planned, I would probably make my attempted seduction sometime later in the week, but there was no way I was letting Sean know that.  I still wasn’t sure whether I had the guts to follow through on my seduction plot.
*
*
*

“Good. Maybe you can have a housewarming party?  That would be fun, right?” Sean smiled.

I had to swallow a laugh because given the direction of my thoughts, ‘houswarming party’ seemed like a dirty euphemism.  Lucky for me, Claudia and Angela walked out of the cinema right at that moment.

“There they are.” I said quietly.  Sean shifted his attention to them.
*
*
*

We followed them with our eyes as they walked along slowly, obviously not aware that they were being watched by anyone.
*
*
*

By the way they walked together and held hands, we were only slightly surprised when they kissed.
*
*
*

Now we had a theory about why Elliot Foster and Claudia Abbott became friends.

Wow, that little double date certainly did turn into a train wreck! Did Nick really forget to warn them, or was he consciously or unconsciously seeking a way to fight and break up with Erica? I wonder…

Nice angles in your shots! And very festive opening tableau!

Looking forward to seeing how Ed’s plot turns out. Wonder how sneaky she will manage to be? ;-) And I hope her mother doesn’t come by with some housewarming cookies at an inopportune moment!

DB: The date was pretty much a disaster. I’m almost certain that Nick really did forget to warn them.

Thank you! I’m glad you like the shots and the cover picture. :)

I think Ed will be pretty sneaky…she’s a clever woman. But oh my–the thought of Judith coming over with housewarming cookies at that time is pretty hilarious!

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! :)

Huh? Wait, what’s the theory? Really, a cliffhanger? Ahhh!!! :P I love Sean’s face in the last still-classic

    • raquelaroden said

Starrsim: I wasn’t sure whether I was being really obvious or really subtle–I thought for sure I was being obvious because I think Willow Weeds picked up on what’s going on back in Chapter 7. I’ll make it really clear what their theory is next chapter for sure. ;) Thank you for reading and commenting!

Nothing worse than being in a room when there’s that ‘pre-fight’ tension. *shudders* I feel bad for Ed.

I loved the title shot. Ed makes one sexy elf!

And the last shot of Sean made me burst out laughing. Too perfect! And…if their theory is right about Miss Abbott and Elliot then I hope for his sake they can continue their friendship. Being a teenager is awkward enough…not being part of the norm is…well, it’s good he has someone to talk to. :)

Thank you for another great chapter! I always admire your staging and shots. Especially the last shot of the diner party. Both Ed and Sean look solemn and like they’re trying to focus on their food…instead of the tension between Erica and Nick.

    • raquelaroden said

Happyberrypink: Exactly! It’s terrible to be in a situation like that. I’m glad you liked the cover! It was fun to make. :)

I managed to catch Sean in mid-sentence, but it looks like he’s shocked, lol! We’ll get to see some of the reaction to the theory in the next chapter I think….if not the next, then certainly the one after that.

Aww, thank you! I get really lucky with the shots–in that one, Ed and Sean were just eating and happened to look like they were concentrating very hard on their food. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

    Yay a new chapter!:D

Great cover with Santa Nick, lol! Although Sean looks like he just found out he was on the naughty list or he’s jealous of all the attention Ed is paying Santa Nick, lmao.;D

I believe I know what the theory is and I definitely understand why he got so close to his teacher. I hope the situation is handled sensitively so that neither his nor his teacher’s private lives are compromised to the whole school.

    • raquelaroden said

Ladyravenhawke: Thank you! I’m glad you like the cover–it’s funny you say that about Sean. Originally, I wanted Ed to sit on Nick’s lap, but I couldn’t get it posed well enough to suit me.

We’ll see a little bit more of how the situation will be handled in the next chapter or two. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I think that dinner was about as awkward as I expected it to be! I wouldn’t have liked to be Nick once Ed and Sean left – Erica would have really let fly!

As for the theory of why Elliot might have struck up a friendship with Claudia, I think I’m on the same wavelength as Ed and Sean are but I’m going to keep my lips zipped until I find out for sure. ;) But if I’m right, I’m glad to see them making some progress with that case, however small it might end up being. Sean’s face is fantastic in that last picture.

Ed must be getting nervous and/or excited about this seduction plot of hers (and yeah, I kind of am too ;) ). It’s mere days away!

    • raquelaroden said

Carla: I think I would have had to leave if it had been me at that dinner. Probably the only thing keeping Ed from leaving was Sean. You can bet that Nick was getting griped at as soon as they left.

I know Ed and Sean are glad to be making progress on the case, too. They’ve been doing so much surveillance and it was getting them nowhere for a while, so to finally have a workable theory is really satisfying. Now they can compare that hunch to any other evidence that may turn up. We might see the confirmation or disconfirmation in the next chapter, but maybe not because I’ll start with Sunday, and that’s Ed’s big moving day! We get to see refinished floors! (LOL-how exciting, huh?)

Ed is getting really nervous about the seduction plot. She has a very good idea of how she wants to do it, but she’s just really not sure she’ll be able to follow through. But, like you indicate, she’s also excited–so that might win out in the end. :)

Thank you for reading and commenting!

Oh dear, that date… I do like Erica though. I could be prepared to upgrade my dreams of a threesome to dreams of a foursome ;)

Love that shot outside the theatre, really well staged with that and the one of Ed/Sean on the bench.

    • raquelaroden said

Rad: LMAO! You have a masochistic streak, I think–Erica is so catty! :) She is gorgeous, though.

Thank you! I was very happy with the way the shots turned out, despite it being dark (notoriously difficult to get good shots outside when it is dark). As always, thank you for reading and commenting!

  7. I’m doing a small (and very dignified) dance in my seat going: “I was right! I knew it!” You haven’t actually come out and said it yet and don’t want to spoild anyone who hasn’t been picking up on the clues so far, but I am now 100% sure I’m right about Elliot and his teacher. It’s really sad that a student can’t become close with a teacher who can truly help him sort out his life and feelings without other people seeing something wrong in it. I have to say your many subtle hints were masterly done, always mentioned a little off hand as if it didn’t mean anything. You’re one heck of a mystery writer! :-) I love the last picture, Sean’s face is priceless, he did not quite see that coming I think.

Oh, I could really feel the awkward, tense atmosphere while they were eating. I pity Erica more and more, though not as much as I pity Nick, they’re so blind! I don’t think there’s any way for them to break this off amicably, they’re somehow both convinced they’re in love when they’re clearly headed for a train wreck. But they’re both too proud to realise the truth. I think they will both end up bitter and recentful of each other and it’s just sad for them.

    • raquelaroden said

Willow Weeds: lol! I am trying to picture a dignified seat dance….. ;) Thank you very much–I tried to weave the clues in as we went so that the reader could solve the mystery, too, and I’m excited that some were able to pick up on it! It’s funny because I wanted people to be able to solve it themselves, but at the same time, when I could see them getting close I thought I was being too obvious, lol.

That dinner with Erica and Nick was pretty bad. I think they settled into their relationship for a while because it was easier than looking for something else, but I also think that at first, they both were very much attracted to each other and they found the other exciting. If something isn’t done, their relationship isn’t likely to last..

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! :)
