Chapter 9. Quality Time with Erica

FRIDAY, 1:10 P.M.
It was mine.
I’d just signed the papers that made it mine. I walked over the threshold–my threshold. The house was mine.
*
*
*

It was a mess, but a workable mess. A moldable mess. I could make it into anything I wanted. As soon as I’d finished signing the last in the huge stack of papers that made it my responsibility, I started going through the things that needed to be done. The list was long, but I was excited to begin. I’d taken a half day off of work so I could revel in the feeling, and also because Mom would be coming by soon to help me start on the cleaning.
*
*
*

A junkyard would be coming by to pick up the old stove and the kitchen sink. They were rusted through and not worth salvaging, so I’d built in the cost of new applicances and fixtures for the kitchen into my renovation budget.
*
*
*

I had already lined up a service to refinish the old floors, and they would begin tomorrow morning. I wanted to get it done before I moved a lot of furniture into the house. The painting would have to be done with my furniture and boxes in the house, because my landlord had agreed to let me out of my lease as long as I could get out of my apartment in the next week. Sunday would be the real moving day. Mom, Dad, Connor, Kendra, and Sean would be helping me load up my furniture into Connor’s pick-up truck and my boxes into various vehicles. Nick was going to help out by covering any surveillance that we might need to do for the superintendent’s case on Sunday, though Sean and I were still going to follow Claudia Abbott on Saturday night.
*
*
*

Mom and I were going to try to scrub down the bathroom fixtures before making any final decisions on replacing them. Sean would be working on the leak behind the sink tomorrow morning. I’d already contacted the electric company to get the power and water switched on today. I changed into the grungy clothes and wished that I wouldn’t have to change back out of them in several hours, when I would have to get ready for my dinner date with Nick and Erica.

6:50 P.M.

“Wow, he really doesn’t live far from you. We could have walked from your house.”
“Yeah, but I was picking you up anyway so I thought we’d drive.”
Sean’s neighborhood had been established by a very laid-back Home Owner’s Association, so there were no rules concerning the specific architecture of the homes. I thought it would be fun to just walk around his neighborhood looking at the houses, because every single house was different. The tidy brick two-story that was Nick’s house was nothing at all like Sean’s Spanish-style home. Nick greeted us at the door and led us inside.

“Ed, feel free to have a seat in here. I was about to get Erica a drink, and I can grab one for you too–what would you like?”
“Oh, I’ll just have whatever Erica’s having.”
“Scotch on the rocks, then.” Nick replied cheerfully.
“Wait, what?” I looked at Erica, aghast, then relaxed when everyone else laughed.
“He’s just kidding–it’s a rum and coke.” Erica smiled.
“Oh. I can handle that.”
*
*
*

Minutes later, I stared longingly at the sliding doors, wishing that I wasn’t bound by etiquette and common decency to stay indoors alone with Erica. Sean and Nick were outside with beers and the grill, minding the steaks.
“So you signed on a house today?” Erica asked.
“Yes. It’s a fixer-upper on the beach.”
*
*
*

“Does it need a lot of work?”
“Oh yeah. But I’m really excited about it.”
“See, I’d need a house to be turn-key. The thought of doing a lot of work on a house is just exhausting. You’re very brave.”
“Or just a little crazy.”
*
*
*

I didn’t know what else to talk about, and I mentally flipped through subjects in my head, trying valiantly to find something to fill the silence.
“So you and Nick–how did you meet?”
“Oh, I hired him to do some investigative work a few years ago, for a case brought against a police officer here. After the work was done, he asked me to dinner and we’ve been seeing each other ever since.
“Yes, though I certainly never thought I’d end up dating a private investigator.”
“Oh?” I felt my neck tense up–something in the way she said it made me defensive.
“Well, they don’t have the greatest reputations.”
*
*
*

“Much like lawyers and politicians.” I said before I could stop myself.
Erica gave me a tight smile. “I guess that’s true. ” She looked around, then stood up and went to the fireplace. “I think I’ll light a fire–it’s a little cold in here.”
In more ways than one, I thought.
“Speaking of lawyers, how did you choose law?” I rushed to change the subject.
“It’s a family tradition. My father was a lawyer, and his father was a lawyer, and so on. I grew up around it and I always knew it was what I wanted to do.”
“Did they go into politics, too?”
*
*
*

“No, that is definitely a first for my family. But I think I can do a lot of good here, given the chance.”
“I know that Nick certainly values your help.”
“I wish I could do more, but sometimes my hands are tied. Plus, with all the leaks….sometimes I just make things worse.”
There was no denying that.
*
*
*

“So I bet your parents really like Nick.”
“Actually, they’ve never met him.” At my look of surprise, she added, “Not that kind of relationship.”
I only had a moment to wonder what the hell that meant before she added, “We’ll, I’d better get the salad ready.”
I offered to help, but she turned me down.
Authorial Interjection: So for some reason, I had the hardest time committing to a cover concept–I think in the future when I have that much trouble that I’m just going to not do a cover for that chapter, because it seriously delayed my release of this chapter. The covers are fun and all, but I had the pictures for this chapter taken on Saturday. I spent my game time on Sunday trying to get the cover shot right, when I could have spent it getting the chapter edited and posted. I’m still not happy with the cover. Oh well, live and learn!

Another great post, I still wonder if Erica isn’t doing the leaking herself.
raquelaroden said
Starrsim: That’s certainly an interesting theory, and probably one that Ed or Sean has wondered about a time or two.
Thank you for reading and commenting!

Oh my god. I can feel the tension in the room when Erica and Ed are left alone. Eek. I’m with Ed…I’d want to rush out to the balcony as well. I’ve been in similar situations…having to make nice with a friend’s lady whom I had nothing in common with and…*laughs* Well let’s just say you wrote the scene so well I think I felt my stomach knot itself as if I was sitting in the room!
Also, I can’t wait to see Ed’s home once she’s cleaned it all up!
Thank you for another great chapter!

Happyberrypink: I’m so glad I wrote the scene well–I wanted to convey Ed’s discomfort in a realistic way. She was dreading the evening, and it just didn’t help that no matter where she turned the conversation, there was a sore point. She tried to stick with things they had in common–mainly, Nick–and it still didn’t work.
I’m really excited about showing Ed’s house in various stages of transformation.

I can’t imagine too many other circumstances where scrubbing down bathroom fixtures was a more attractive prospect than dinner but I think it’s understandable for Ed here!
“Much like lawyers and politicians.” I said before I could stop myself.
Oooh, awkward! I can’t wait to see the rest of this evening. It’s so tense already.
“Not that kind of relationship” is kind of vague, isn’t it? What kind of relationship is it then? And is she saying it’s not that kind of relationship between her and Nick, or between her and her parents? I’m sure Ed is wondering the same things right now!
raquelaroden said
Carla: Ed would definitely rather be scrubbing the ancient toilet in her house than facing down Erica over steak.
Ed doesn’t like Erica’s snobbish attitude regarding private investigators–she’s proud of the work she does with Sean and Nick, and Erica makes it sound like they are engaged in a sordid endeavor.
That statement about the nature of the relationship is very vague–Ed will likely be thinking about that statement for a while.

What a b*****, Erica is! It’s almost as if she wasn’t trying to be cordial. There Ed is trying so hard but she rebuffs Ed at every turn. Housework seems much more appealing in this light.
Thanks for the new chapter!
raquelaroden said
Ladyravenhawke: lol!! Erica certainly wasn’t trying very hard.
She can be a little…prickly. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I have been in Ed’s shoes with a fixer-upper house. Even without the prospect of prickly Erica, I can imagine it would be hard being anywhere but her new home that night. Camping out on the floor in a sleeping bag can be wonderful if the place is newly yours! Go, Ed!
What on earth did Erica mean by, “not that kind of relationship,” and is that Nick’s feeling, too? Or would he be surprised to hear her say that?
Great shots, especially the awkward Ed and Erica moments.
raquelaroden said
DB: Really? Was it fun to fix up or really stressful? I imagine Ed will go right back to her place as soon as she can.
We’ll find out more about what Erica meant, and what it might mean for Nick.

Oh, it was both fun AND really stressful! It was a great creative outlet, but all the million choices served to lay on the pressure. Everything depends on something else. You have to decide if the floors can be saved or if they have to be replaced, and if they have to be replaced, do you want wood or tile or carpet, and if you want wood, then solid or engineered? And what color? And what finish? But before all that, you need to paint. Color, finish, all over again. Power rush and pressure play, all at one time. Happy memories, mostly. Few regrets.
I’m sure Ed will enjoy most of the manual labor, seeing as how she will have Sean scenery and, hopefully, back rubs for her sore muscles. I’m really looking forward to how this part of her life progresses!
raquelaroden said
DB: I think the million choices is exactly why I should stay away from house projects–I have a hard enough time choosing things for my Sim houses, much less a real house!
I’m excited to have Ed fix up the house.
Jules said
Wow! This is why I hate talking with people I don’t know! Poor Ed!
Okay…so what kind of relationship is it? Hmmm…I wonder…
I can’t wait to find out more!
Jules said
By the way, I love the cover art! It’s too cute!
raquelaroden said
Jules: Aww, thanks!
raquelaroden said
Jules: I know exactly what you mean. I hate those situations too.
We’ll find out what kind of relationship it is before long.
Thank you for reading and commenting!

I like so much Ed’s impulsiveness! It certainly gets her into trouble at times, but overall, it is what makes her so adorable. Her line, “Much like lawyers and politicians”, though a little rude, was very bold and while it wasn’t the best of lines to say to somebody you wish to be on friendly terms with, it was what I would have probably said too if I heard such a stereotyping remark about a job (especially considering that Ed is into that kind of job and her boyfriend is a private investigator as well).
Erica’s “not that kind of relationship” comment was indeed a little vague but I’m starting to see why Nick seems to be feeling a little awkward around Sean and Edith. Perhaps their relationship is the kind of relationship he would like to have too and Erica’s turning him down. Perhaps Erica doesn’t value him enough and is too focused on her career to be giving to a relationship with Nick, whose job and social status might be unappealing to her… But enough with my speculations. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the night will go!
raquelaroden said
Sfe: Ed was just so irritated by the comment that she didn’t think before she spoke. She’s only willing to do so much to be friends, lol.
We’ll learn more about Nick’s feelings and the nature of his relationship with Erica, but those are certainly interesting speculations!
Thank you for reading and commenting!

Now I’m actually a little depressed for Erica, peeking into her mind and world makes me feel bad for her, she can’t have it easy, a lot of pressure from all sides. Being known as having a relationship with a private investigator might cause all sorts of problems for her politically and I get the feeling her family is of the type that values what others may think and wouldn’t approve, so she’s telling herself that it’s a relationship she can keep to herself, even though that must be a burden and will eventually hurt them both. I’m sure she does care for Nick, but maybe she’d be doing them both a favour breaking it off before he starts expecting more than she’s willing to invest and they both end up hating each other. Damn hadn’t Sean and Ed been so perfect for each other I’m sure she would’ve easily lured him away, without even being aware she was doing it, of course, Ed is clever but she could never trick someone she cared about.
I love her house, I am really excited to see how it transforms over the coming chapters.
raquelaroden said
Willow Weeds: You’re in my head, lol! No, seriously you’re pretty much spot on.
I feel kinda bad for Erica too, but I also think she needs to get a bit more of a backbone. She’s assertive and strong when it comes to her career, but she may cave to pressures when it comes to her personal life. Maybe she believes she can’t really have it all, but she’s so concerned about her career that she may not even try to balance it out.
Your speculations about Ed and her ability to lure Nick away are very interesting as well….
I’m very excited to face the challenge of showing a house in transition….it’s certainly something I’ve never posed before, so I’ll have to try some tricks out…I’m really happy that the Pets expansion came with some beat-up looking sawhorses!
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!
