Chapter 8. Distraction

Posted by raquelaroden on October 23, 2011

Happy Halloween early, just in case I can’t post next weekend!

*

*

WEDNESDAY, 9:20 P.M.

“Dammit! Why can’t I ever win?”

“Well, I have been doing this for a while, you know. It would be a little insulting if you could beat me in only a month or two.”

“Still, I feel like I’m not making any progress.”

*

*

*

“You are–I can tell you’re getting better.”

We stopped for a break and as I took a sip of water, a few drops of condensation fell onto the front of my shirt. When I saw Sean’s eyes fix on the wet spots on my shirt, I suddenly realized that I had a weapon in my arsenal that I could use to increase my chances of winning one of our sparring matches.

*

*

*

“Man, I’m burning up.” I pulled my shirt over my head and glanced at Sean out of the corner of my eye as I turned around. His attention was definitely concentrated on my chest.

*

*

*

We started sparring again, and after only a few moments it was clear that Sean was distracted. I knew this tactic wouldn’t work on anyone else, but it was nice to land a few good punches and kicks for a change. There was the smallest chink in his defenses, and I took full advantage.

Sean began to look at me suspiciously after I’d executed a particularly tricky kick to the side of his face, and he called a break. I was busy making plans to dress in skimpier attire the next training night when he shrugged out of his shirt and faced me, grinning.

*

*

*

“Two can play at that game, darlin’.”

I felt laughter bubbling up, and it came out in a quick burst. We were both laughing when Nick walked through the gate into the backyard.

*

*

*

“Oh, hey Nick.” Sean was still grinning.

“Sean, Ed.” Nick’s eyes traveled over me lightning quick, then he was focused on Sean. “Sorry to interrupt, but I was on my way home and I knew it was a training night.”

“No problem man. What’s up?”

*

*

*

“I wanted to discuss some strategy for the big stakeouts we have coming up. I have a little more information now, and I’ve been thinking a lot about it–I thought I’d get your opinions.”

“Sounds good. Let’s go inside.” Sean led the way, after picking up his shirt and putting it back on. I did the same and we settled in the living area.

*

*

*

“So will we be starting the stakeout this weekend?” I asked. Nick had said that we would be starting the stakeout later this week.

“Actually, that’s one of the things I’ve been wrestling with. As much as I’d like to get started as soon as possible, we just don’t have the manpower to conduct really thorough surveillance and to work on the case for SVISD at the same time.”

*

*

*

“We’re already committed to the case for SVISD–but I think Ed and I are close to finishing it up.”

“It might be better to take a little more time to do some serious reconnaissance and to establish a good plan to handle the surveillance anyway. I’d hoped to start this weekend, but I don’t think it’s a good idea.” Nick admitted.

I was actually relieved that we wouldn’t be starting Nick’s mission yet, because I’d received word from my real estate agent that we would be closing on the house on Friday. I told Nick as much, and he laughed at the thought of me trying to juggle a move, beginning some house renovations, plus two different stake-out assignments, all in addition to my full-time job at the library.

*

*

*

“OK, I feel a lot better about moving it back now. It will give me more time to try to think of the best way to get a good line of sight on these gas stations.”

“Gas stations?” I asked.

“Oh, that’s right–I haven’t told either of you anything about the locations. We’ve narrowed it down to two gas stations on the highway to Bridgeport. They are about five miles apart. One is just before you get to Bay Ridge RV Park, and the other is the first gas station you reach after passing that park.”

“Are they in city limits?” Sean asked.

*

*

*

“Just barely–which means that SVPD still has jurisdiction if anything needs to be done.”

“Are there any buildings around these places that can be commandeered?”

“Nope. I’ll have to do more looking at the land around them to see if there’s a wooded area or something to use as cover.”

I was not liking the sound of this assignment at all–conducting around-the-clock surveillance of two different gas stations in the open air would be pretty uncomfortable. I’d probably have to pee in the woods.

*

*

*

“Why can’t we use video cameras at each site and monitor them from an RV at the park?”

Sean and Nick both looked surprised at the suggestion.

“I guess it’s not out of the question–we just don’t have an RV. I suppose we could look into renting one.” Nick was considering the finances.

“My parents have an RV.” I smiled. It was at the same storage facility that held Scott’s belongings.

*

*

*

“That would be awesome.” Sean was already on board with the idea. “It would make shifts a lot easier–you and I could each take one of the camera feeds during the day, and Ed would come after work, which would allow us to take turns sleeping and showering. Surveillance in comfort.”

*

*

*

“This could work.” Nick agreed. “Would you mind asking your parents if we could use it?”

“Not at all–anything that keeps me from having to use the bathroom in the woods.” I said. I knew my parents would let us use the RV, so the prospect of keeping watch on the two gas stations seemed less daunting than it had before.

“Well, since we’re slowing things down a bit on this particular case, and since you’ll be closing on your house on Friday, why don’t we celebrate? Erica wanted us to have dinner together, so how about Friday night, at my house?” Nick suggested.

*

*

*

“That’s great.” I said, and I hoped my smile looked genuine. I had a feeling that any social event with Erica was likely to be more stressful than fun, but I appreciated the thought all the same. “What can we bring?”

*

*

*

Authorial Interjection: So, I realized about midweek that I forgot to make a cover for the last chapter–I had taken the time to shoot the pictures and everything, but I just forgot to make it when I posted the chapter!  I went back and did that this weekend, and here’s what it looks like, for anyone who is interested:

Yes, peeing in comfort is very important and go Edith for using all the defenses at her disposal :P

    • raquelaroden said

Starrsim: lol! I know that peeing in comfort is high on my list of priorities! Thank you for reading and commenting. :)

  2. Distraction indeed, sometimes it’s good to be late to the party, because then they’ll have taken out the second cake too, um, what I mean is I got two chapters to read instead of studying boring assembly language or better yet sleeping! Sleep who needs it?! I live on coffee and adrenaline.

Anyways, Sean shouldn’t be allowed to take his shirt off, I mean at least it’s night, in the daytime he’d cause a traffic jam… in a street with no cars! Man, that boy is ripped!! I love that her plan worked, but that he caught on to her, shows he already knows her really well.

I really laughed out loud at how Ed’s first thought about the stakeouts is I’ll have to pee in the woods! Dangerous bad guys with potential weapons, piece of cake, but no toilet? Now that is a major concern! lol Ed is such a genuinely likeable character, sweet and smart and normal, maybe the reason I don’t really like Erica is beause she makes Ed uncomfortable and I can just relate to that feeling.

By the way, I’m just really loving your covers, it’s neat to see the characters out of character in other settings, and I love how Ed’s always at the center of attention, as she should, she’s the main character after all.

    • raquelaroden said

Willow Weeds: Oh, I need sleep nowadays. Both baby and I have a bedtime of 9:00 P.M.. I feel so old.

Sean is definitely ripped, and I agree that he could cause some major injuries if he took off his shirt at a crowded intersection. I imagine that he was surprised that Ed would think of a distraction tactic like that one, but you’re right–it shows that he knows the way she thinks already. :)

Ed’s been on a lot of stakeouts lately, so this is apparently the foremost concern on her mind, lol! Her most recent stakeouts haven’t involved anything more dangerous than being discovered by random passersby. I think you’ve identified what makes a lot of readers view Erica with distrust–if Ed is uneasy around her, then you feel like you would be, too.

I’m so glad you like the covers! I can’t believe I forgot the last one, but I guess I was in such a hurry to get the chapter up that I totally forgot about it. :) Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  3. I am definately in love with both of those covers!!!!

IM SO HAPPY THAT YOUR BACK!! Your baby may or may not be the cutest baby I’ve seen for an age! SO CUTE! And happy looking! You lucky mother you! aWWWWH! :’)

I am definately going to spend some time re-reading all of everything so that I can be on top of what’s going down! :D IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! I feel like everything is building up you know? Are you building all that tension on purpose?

The Sean and Ed sparring scene was SO funny!! Love it! I love this whole entire series! I had faith that it was too brilliant to dissapear into the ether, but I was so shocked when I looked into my email and saw this! :) Happy facing!

    • raquelaroden said

SugarCookie: Aww, thanks! I have a lot of fun thinking up new things to do with the covers.

I’m happy to be back! It’s lovely to receive such a warm welcome back, too! It’s harder to get chapters done than ever before (you saw why–that’s one cute baby!), but I knew I’d come back to it. :)

The sparring scene occurred to me out of sequence (not really related to anything else) and I thought this was a good place for it, so I’m really happy it went over well. Thank you so much for reading and commenting! :)

That’s a fun shot for Halloween – poor Sean, though! I was hoping you’d post last week’s forgotten cover too and I’m glad you did. Ed’s working that flapper look quite nicely!

I snorted at Ed in her crop top and then shirtless Sean. Nicely played! Sean is looking even more muscular than usual too. It must be all that sparring with Ed.

I love that Ed’s mind went straight to having to pee in the woods! But hey, the RV idea is going to work out well for Nick and Sean as well anyway.

I can’t wait to learn what happens at dinner with Nick and Erica. Poor Ed. I can’t see that being a particularly fun night either!

    • raquelaroden said

Carla: Yeah..they had to have a victim, and I thought it would be interesting to pair Ed and Nick for a change. :) I thought Ed looked rather becoming as a flapper, too!

Ed just wanted to throw Sean off guard for a bit. Sean might be more muscular because the skin I’m using works with the Late Night sliders–I’m not sure we’ve seen him shirtless since I updated the skin, lol!

Ed really has been doing a lot of surveillance lately, so she’s all about being more comfortable. I think the RV is an interesting idea, and I am actually kinda excited about designing it as a set. :)

Dinner with Nick and Erica will be fun simply because we’ll get to see Nick’s house for the first time–but that’s fun for us, not so much for Ed. ;) Thank you for reading and commenting!

  5. Bee said

So glad you’re updating again :)

Your LO is precious! Makes me want to consider having a third. Almost ;>

Out of curiosity, how much game time does it take to set up your shots etc?

    • raquelaroden said

Bee: Thank you! It’s good to be updating again. :)

Aww, thanks! I can’t imagine having another right now–the hubby and I are not ruling it out entirely, but we’re definitely feeling that one is definitely enough. I can’t imagine having two!

How much game time it takes to set up shots really depends on a variety of factors, but I’d say I’m at least sinking 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours (and probably more–I just don’t notice the time flying by because it’s fun). If I have a set to design, it takes so much longer. I will say that adding the cover shots really sucks up a lot of time, but they’re too much fun for me to give up! Thank you so much for reading and commenting. :)

Lol, I was so engrossed in the story I didn’t even notice the missing cover, even though I look forward to them. I love seeing your little experiments with Ed and company, lol. Although I’m really sad about Sean in this one, he’s too hot to die!

“I’d probably have to pee in the woods.” Her being so blase about everything else but that is part of why I love Ed, lol.

It’s great how the guys are starting to listen and give her ideas consideration. They’re starting to sound like a real team now.

Double date with Neck and Erica…..sounds interesting but poor Ed! I can’t wait to see Nick’s house and compare it to Sean’s.

    • raquelaroden said

Ladyravenhawke: I am glad that it didn’t stick out that the cover was missing–it didn’t take long to put it together, since I already had the pictures. Sean probably is too hot to die–we’ll say he was just pretending in that picture. ;)

Ed probably isn’t thinking very much about any possible danger that a stakeout might bring–after all, Sean and Nick will both be around for this particular stakeout, so her odds of being able to break away and be harmed have dropped dramatically!

I think they are starting to function more as a team, and to take her ideas a little more seriously. It helps that Sean was pretty sick of hiding in bushes to conduct surveillance too, LOL!

I think the double date will be interesting, and I’m really excited about Nick’s house. I designed it a looooong time ago, and I’m probably going to go through it to see if any improvements can be made or if something should be different since I know more about his character now. :) Thank you for reading and commenting!

  7. gayl said

LOL at Ed’s first thought being about peeing in the woods. Not the danger, not the hours but peeing in the woods.

Sean is looking mighty fine I must say. I really do love the definition. I love the dynamic between these three. I especially love how the relationship between Ed and Sean has grown.

Double date with Erica would not be high on my list of ways to celebrate but it might be more interesting than Ed thinks.

    • raquelaroden said

Gayl: That is Ed for you–she doesn’t always worry about the things she should, and seems to worry about things that others would view as minor. :)

Sean can play a mean game of “distract your opponent”, can’t he? ;)

I think it is important to show that Sean and Ed can laugh at each other, so I’m glad you like the way it shows their relationship’s growth and change. :)

Ed will get to see Erica in a completely different context–a purely social environment. It should be interesting. :) Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  8. SB said

Your cover shot is so funny! Perfect for Halloween!

Like Gayl, I laughed at Ed’s concern about peeing in the woods. That’s so true to her character though. Her relationship with Sean is humming right along: it’s wonderful to see them laughing and teasing each other. He’s looking very fine, too.

I like the idea of the double date. There’s something about seeing someone in a totally different context that tends to help put the pieces together. It should definitely be interesting!

    • raquelaroden said

Beth: Thank you! I thought it was funny in a morbid kinda way. :)

Ed’s relationship with Sean is going pretty well thus far–I’m happy I was able to find a way to show how they can laugh together. :)

I’m pretty excited about the double date myself–we don’t get much face time with Erica, so it will be nice to see her for more than a scene or two. Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

  9. The look on Sean’s face when Ed reveals her Converse top is too funny! His poor little eyes bugging out…

I bet Ed would feel better about being around Erica if she could see her eating a cheeseburger. You know, getting a little mustard on the corner of her mouth, etc. I hate that Ed feels somehow inferior, but I guess if she didn’t, she wouldn’t be the charming Ed we know and love!

Love, love, love the Roaring 20s picture! Hey, why not have them go to a costume party sometime? With masks and all, it would be an interesting investigation scenario…

    Great chapter, as usual!

P.S. Peeing in the woods CAN be dangerous. Think of poison ivy and snakes!

    • raquelaroden said

DB: Sean was all eyes when she took her t-shirt off, lol!

The idea of Erica with mustard smeared on her face is pretty hilarious–I think you’re right that it would make Ed see her as more human, less perfect. :)

A costume party!! That would be awesome! *files away for later use*

I definitely believe peeing in the woods is dangerous–there are spiders there, too!

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

      • DB loves her Mac said

EEEK! Spiders are dangerous not just because of their bite but also because they could give me a heart attack! Ick ick ick ick. So true!

  10. Sfe said

Ed’s using her feminine wiles to beat Sean? Where did the shy little girl go? :D She should have predicted that Sean has his own ways to distract her as well, though. What a sweet couple they are!

A double date would be very interesting. Firstly, because we might get a little insight into what it is that’s making Nick happy again, and secondly because it’s sad how Ed feels sort of intimidated by Erica’s seeming flawlessness and I would like to see how she will handle it.

Regarding their cases, you’re not giving too much away yet, which is a good thing. We’ll have to wait and see the results of their surveillance I suppose. I can’t wait!

    • raquelaroden said

Sfe: Ed is definitely becoming less shy around Sean. I think he was surprised that she would use that method to try to beat him, but it was a good sort of surprise. :)

I think the double date will be fun to shoot and write.I’m sure some interesting things will be revealed. ;)

Yep, the cases take time to build–they can’t get lucky and see incriminating behavior right away every time.

Thank you for reading and commenting!!
